The power at Waimate’s The Naked Chip was restored right on cue, as they were awarded their The Chip Group regional winner certificate on Wednesday.

Owners Beverley and Rene Bullock purchased the business a year ago and have taken it from strength to strength.

High winds that battered Waimate on Tuesday left the town without power, with most restored on Wednesday afternoon.

Last Friday, they were notified they were named the top chip ship in the Timaru – Southland region in the 2013 Best Chip Shop competition and had to keep tight-lipped.

“It’s very unexpected,” said Mrs Bullock.

Chip Group chairperson Glenda Gourley said judges were looking for the shops serving the most delicious hot chips, with the lowest possible fat content.
