Oamaru is “the most generous community in New Zealand”, Oamaru Foodbank manager Archdeacon Bernard Wilkinson says.
His comments come after the unprecedented success of Monday night’s Lions Combined Churches Toot for Tucker food drive.
Archdeacon Wilkinson said the foodbank now had “plenty of resources” to cope with whatever demands they faced over Christmas.
There was a need in the community for the foodbank and, unlike other towns, Oamaruvians always did what they could to help out, Archdeacon Wilkinson said.
“Every year there seems to be more and more people helping.”
Lions District Governor Allan Prakash said the combined efforts of St John, the Fire Service, various Lions clubs, the air cadets and scouts, among others, combined to make this year’s Toot for Tucker food drive the most successful one ever.
About 80 people took part in the food drive and people of all ages were “out in force” participating, Mr Prakash said.
“The response from the public was absolutely brilliant. The Christmas spirit was there,” Mr Prakash said.
The Oamaru Churches Foodbank is open every Friday from 10am until noon, including every Friday throughout the holidays.
The Foodbank is located at 4 France St.
