Dean takes up ‘bikini challenge’

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean could be forced to parade down the main street of Wanaka in her bikini.

Yes, you heard correctly, our MP could well have to wear her bikini down the main street of Wanaka thanks to a bet she made with Nelson MP Nick Smith.

Nelson and Wanaka have made the final five in the Gigatown competition. If Wanaka beats Nelson, Mr Smith will have to don his speedos and walk down his local main street; if Nelson beats Wanaka, Mrs Dean will have to turn out in her bikini and do the same in Wanaka.

Wanaka falls into the Waitaki electorate which Mrs Dean represents and she and her fellow National MP Mr Smith decided a challenge was in order.

“I couldn’t turn down a challenge from Nick Smith,” Mrs Dean said.

The pair have both been campaigning to help their towns claim the ultra fast broadband which is the prize for the winning town.

“I do not wish it upon anyone having to see me in my togs walking along the main street in Wanaka.”

Despite agreeing to the bet she describes as silly, Mrs Dean is confident she will not have to damage the image of Wanaka much.

“Everyone would much rather see Nick Smith in his speedos, and I’d love Oamaru to back Wanaka like me and everyone needs to comment #gigatownwanaka.”

Nelson MP Nick Smith said he was looking forward to the challenge.

“Both towns made the Gigatown finals and we’re looking forward to see which one comes out on top.”

Since the election MP Nick Smith has been hitting the pool to trim down.

“Things are close at the moment and I’m getting in better shape just in case, but it ain’t over till the fat lady sings, we’ll surge late, I’m confident I won’t have to be seen in speedos.”

Mr Smith said people should vote Nelson.

“I know people would much rather see Jacqui donning her bikini and hitting the streets of Wanaka, than me in my speedos.”

They will find out who the winner is when the competition ends at the end of December.

Meanwhile, Oamaru was in the running early in the Gigatown competition Oamaru started well before fading and not making it into the top towns.
