Tonight is Oamaru’s chance to find out how having the fastest internet in the southern hemisphere will change the town, Gigatown Oamaru ambassador Annabel Berry says.
At 5.30pm today a meeting will be held at the Oamaru Opera House for local businesses to hear from Chorus representative Victoria Crone about the benefits of ultra-fast broadband to the town.
At 7pm, a meeting will be held for the public to ask questions and learn about the Gigatown competition as well, Mrs Berry said.
“We’ve got around 35 to 40 businesses coming,” she said.
“People should turn up to get their business involved.”
The meetings would only take about an hour and would give businesses and the community an opportunity to learn how they can get involved and help Oamaru get the fastest broadband in the southern hemisphere.
Having broadband that fast would “grow and develop our town”, on top of having big economic benefits to the area, Mrs Berry said.
“Bring your friends, as this is all for the community.”
Businesses wanting to attend should RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm their place.
The 7pm meeting is open to everyone.
