A steady stream of people flowed into Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean’s office on Friday to share their views on the New Zealand flag.
Mrs Dean decided to hold an open discussion for those wanting to discuss whether or not the flag should be changed after Prime Minister John Key suggested holding a referendum over changing the flag.
Although most people who came to the discussion wanted to keep the flag the same, they agreed that if it were to change, it needed to still recognise the past.
“If we were to change our flag, I wouldn’t want us to lose sight of what happened in our past,” Mrs Dean said.
“We should not do anything that forgets where we came from.”
The morning had been interesting, and it was important to have the discussion, she said.
The MP would be holding another meeting at her Waimate office 10-11am on February 17.
