This year’s budget, which will see $790 million set aside to alleviate child hardship, should take the pressure of low-income families in North Otago, Waitaki mayor Gary Kircher says.
Beneficiary families and low-income working families will get a boost of up to $25 a week as part of a child hardship package which is the centrepiece of Bill English’s seventh Budget, announced yesterday.
It is the first increase in core benefits, apart from inflation adjustments, since 1972 and will affect 110,000 families.
