Cuppa for a cause battles Alzheimer’s stigma

About 50,000 New Zealanders have dementia and that number is expected to triple by 2050.

On Tuesday, Alzheimer’s Society Otago along with Age Concern and Sports Waitaki hosted Cuppa for a Cause, which raised funds for the North Otago Alzheimer’s Service.

The regular gentle exercise programme was followed by afternoon tea and a performance by the Ukulele Band.

Alzheimer’s Otago manager Julie Butler said a stigma surrounds dementia but events like yesterdays, reduce those stigmas.

“They underestimate the number (of people affected) and the degree of impact,” she said.
