Athletic Marist centre Adam Halkett’s rugby career is over following a spinal injury sustained in last Friday’s Citizens Shield fixture against Maheno at Centennial Park.

Athies were leading Maheno 10-6 early in the second half when the accident occurred and after consultation with Athletic coach Graham Pitches and Maheno coach Mark Wilson, referee Craig Kingan brought an early end to proceedings.

Halkett is being treated at the the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch and is suffering from a dent to the spinal cord and a bulging disk.
