A local support and advocacy organisation is hosting two speakers to talk about their experiences with mental illness tomorrow night.
Supporting Families in Mental Illness Waitaki Incorporated (SF Waitaki) will hold an evening with two speakers, Grant and Jill, to talk about their personal journey through mental illness.
SF Waitaki manager and field worker Ann Harrex said they often held these evenings as an opportunity for families and those suffering from mental illness to find out what other people had experienced.
“They especially like to listen to somebody who’s been through it.
“It is very difficult when your loved one is diagnosed with a mental illness.”
However, listening to others’ stories showed them that people with mental illness could live full lives, she said.
“It is inspirational for them because they can see a light at the end of the tunnel.”
All are welcome to attend the evening and the speakers will answer questions at the end of the talk.
SF Waitaki offers support, education and advocacy to families who have a member with a mental illness.
The evening will be held at the Dean O’Reilly Lounge, Reed St on Wednesday night at 6.30pm.
