The Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust is committed to finding the best option for Harbour St given low tourist numbers five months of the year, chairman Peter Garvan says.
His comment comes in response to Donna Demente’s opinion piece in yesterday’s Oamaru Mail about the direction of the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust.
Mr Garvan said the most important thing is for the trust to work out how to realise people’s aspirations, given the lack of tourists for five months of the year.
“The trust fully respects her right to have an opinion. She’s made an enormous contribution to the community.”
The members of the trust were elected democratically and all have a passion for the area; some have been involved in the community since 1981, Mr Garvan said.
“One of the challenges is that five months of the year, we have low tourist numbers.
The trust is having a strategic meeting on June 21 to work out where it wants to be in five years, he said.
“A variety of different points of view will be canvassed.”
The meeting was not organised in response to the recent debate that Harbour St is not going in the direction it was first intended, as the trust periodically reviews its strategic situation, he said.
“I think all organisations should examine where they are, where they want to be and how to get there.”
