Big choice of events for our Happy 150th
Anyone planning to take part in the Happy 150th Birthday Celebrations for Oamaru this week will certainly be spoilt for choice.
Today, bike riders should pack a picnic lunch and meet at the corner of Wharfe and Tamar Sts for a ride to the Kakanui River boatsheds.
Event organiser Donna Demente said the ride will go ahead unless the weather is really bad.
"At 6.30 tonight, we will meet for drinks at the Criterion and will then bike to the Limelight Cinema to see The Hobbit," she said.
"Tomorrow the day will start with a champagne breakfast in Harbour St followed by the grand opening of Studio Realm and the Mirror City Letterpress, also in Harbour St, from 6.30pm.
"Thursday will wrap up with a night of enjoying the victuallers and other establishments of the Victorian Precinct, including Birdlands and the Criterion."
Friday's celebrations will begin with afternoon tea at Annie's Victorian Tearooms at 3pm, followed by The Last Supper, a picnic at the Harbourside Gardens with music from the Intergalactic Ukelele Orchestra.
"This event will start at six o'clock and will shift to the Grainstore Gallery if it is wet," Ms Demente said.
"It is a bring-your-own picnic tea and will be followed by an 'End of the World' party at Birdlands, starting at 8.30pm."
Ms Demente said the programme will continue on Saturday and Sunday with a variety of activities.
These include the first breakfast of the 'New World' at the Oamaru Public Gardens on Saturday morning and an asado, or Argentinian-style BBQ, later in the day.
On Sunday at 2pm there will be a 60s party featuring between seven and 10 bands, at three different venues.
