Locals are being encouraged to make a splash off Holmes Wharf when the Port FM Local Bird Man competition returns next week.

Although entrants are not restricted to dressing up like a bird, wings may assist with winning the longest splash, says Port FM regional Oamaru breakfast announcer and sales manager Anton Roswell.

"We've had some crazy outfits," he said.

Three cash prizes of $300 are up for grabs including the Longest Splash, Biggest Splash and Best Dressed Splash.

There are a few rules for the event, including no vehicles, winches or bicycles.

You must be over 16 to enter.

Briefing for the event begins at 2.45pm, with the event starting at 3pm.

Entry forms can be picked up from the Port FM office on Thames St and must be returned by 4pm on February 8.
