Drags at airport likely, with conditions
Drag racing events look set to be held at the Oamaru Airport.
A submission by members of the Oamaru Racing Club to the Waitaki District Council Committee of the Whole (CoW) in August, looks set to be rubber-stamped at a meeting tomorrow.
Recommendations to the CoW are that the council allow the Hot Rodders Club to hold drag racing events on Oamaru Airport's tarmac runway and that the council charge $225 per event plus any costs incurred by the council.
The first event is planned for March next year.
In the past the local car club and the Whitestone Hotrod Club have hosted events at the Oamaru Airport.
Similar events are also held at airports around New Zealand, including Motueka and Alexandra.
In Alexandra the races operate as part of the Blossom Festival and used to raise funds for the local kindergarten.
The cost of $225 will cover up to three hours of council officer time to inspect the runway before and after each meeting.
Any additional time will be charged at $75 per hour, plus services such as electricity, cleaning or rubbish collection will also be on-charged.
As part of their submission, the organisers have undertaken to clear the runway before and after each meet, monitor the track surface, maintain a presence from the police, fire brigade and ambulance, and provide on-site rubbish bins and portable toilets.
