Oamaru is all set for its big shopping experience, which will be held on Saturday.

The Shop Local Market Day will see retailers bring merchandise, including Christmas gifts and special items, out of their shops and on to the footpath from 10am until 1pm, to create a colourful market day atmosphere.

As well as the market stalls, there will be entertainment throughout the day at various locations on the street.

Tourism Waitaki event development officer Jan Kennedy said shoppers would enjoy carol singing outside Save the Children at 11am. The Salvation Army Band will be located across from the Opera House at noon.

Mayor Alex Familton would be out and about with his Santa sack, "spreading Christmas cheer and goodwill to his community," she said. "Retailers have been very supportive of the event again this year and I have had a fantastic response, with over 40 participating retailers and four market stalls."

The Victorian Precinct will also join in the promotion.

There will be entertainment in Harbour St and the wine bars and eateries will be open for shoppers to unwind in. "People making purchases in any of the participating retail outlets will go in the draw to win a great prize, including one night's accommodation, dinner and breakfast for two people at Ohau Lodge, and dinner for two people at Portside and Fat Sally's."
