Family day at the track

Racegoers and families alike are going to be well catered for at Sunday's meeting of the Oamaru Harness Racing Club at the Oamaru racecourse.

The 12-race card will be run on the grass track which, according to club president Dave Heffernan, is in tip-top order.

"This meeting will give families a big day out prior to schools returning after the summer break and the club is laying on a selection of free entertainment including mini jeeps, a bouncy castle, the Titanic ship and a bungee tramp," he said. "We will also have a live band, barista coffee and the Punter's Club, plus free admission to the course.

"Top horses and drivers will be at the meeting, including the Williamson Family and the first race will start at noon."

Feature races will be the Springbank Handicap Trot, race six on the card which is sponsored by Alistair and Denise Smith who raced the successful horse Springbank Richard and the Oamaru Harness Racing Club Oamaru Cup, valued at $12,000 which is timed to go at 3.35pm.

Also backing up for a second appearance at the track is last start winner Kotare Yaakov, who has drawn barrier one and will start from the 40m mark in the Oamaru Cup.

According to Mr Heffernan, the club is all set for great harness racing action.

"We certainly look forward to welcoming locals and visitors alike to the course."
