A new manager will takes the reins as Aoraki Polytechnic Oamaru campus manager next month.
Liz Smillie, who is currently administrator at the polytechnic, will replace Irene Sparks in the role on May 1.
She said she had seized the opportunity when it became available.
Her extensive contacts in the community would be beneficial, she said.
“I’ve lived in Oamaru all my life so I know lots of people and have the contacts.”
Mrs Smillie is looking forward to the role and encouraged members of the community to let her know what services they wanted from their polytechnic.
“We are here for businesses and industries in the community and I really would like to hear from business and industry leaders in the community what they want their polytechnic to provide.”
The campus was looking to move into more trades, including hairdressing, hospitality, engineering and automotive, she said.
“I would like to bring in a much bigger hospitality course, which would encompass barista, and…food safety.”
She also wants to expand on tourism studies.
“Tourism is increasing in Oamaru, so that’s something that we can really work with.”
Aoraki Polytechnic chief executive Kay Nelson said Mrs Smillie would bring local knowledge and experience to the role.
“She has a background in administration and marketing, and is well known to many local businesses,” Mrs Nelson said.
“Mrs Smillie will bring to the campus great people skills, strong high school connections, and an extensive knowledge of local industry which we are seeking to engage more with.”
Mrs Sparks had chosen not to apply for the permanent position when her contract expired, she said.
