The hunt is on for the Grinch who stole a Christmas decoration from Thames St.

One of Oamaru's Christmas decorations, worth about $1000, has gone missing.

The tree-shaped decoration in question was located on a street light pole above Regent Florist and Paper Plus.

Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said the decoration disappeared sometime between Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

"Someone has gone to quite a bit of effort to remove it," he said.

"Although it might have been seen as a harmless prank, these decorations are costly to replace."

The decorations were bought about 10 years ago with money raised by the local community and were a valuable community asset to be enjoyed by everyone, Mr Voss said.

Waitaki District Council is offering the culprit, or culprits, the opportunity to do the right thing and return the decoration to council offices in Thames St as soon as possible.

"However, if the decoration doesn't turn up within the next few days, we will be reporting it to the police and asking that any information on its whereabouts, or who was involved with its disappearance, be passed directly onto them," he said.

Mr Voss said he was confident someone would provide information about the missing decoration.
