Last year Oamaru stepped back in time to 1935 for the clash between Maheno and Awakino in the heritage rugby match.

Now it's time to dust off the time machine again for a trip to 1949 for a clash with a military edge between Old Boys and Ngpara next Friday.

The game will be played under rules of the past and will be authentic to the last detail with corners marked out using the time-honoured method of a gumboot.

Old Boys president Barry Meikle believes the day is a great opportunity for people to get together and experience the great history of Oamaru.

"It's a reunion for everyone, there's an after-match function over at the Oamaru Club. We try to keep it pretty local."

"It's an opportunity to play rugby under rules of the past, the game has changed a lot, it's a novelty occasion and entertaining so it should be a good day.

"We're putting a team together of past players between the 40 and 60 age group, it's a fun day played at a pretty pedestrian pace."

Bruce Rowland will be overseeing the fixture for the third successive year and is looking forward to the day for people to remember those who served their country.

"This year's about honouring the returning service people, it'll be a great fun day. There was about a thousand people last time," he said.

Kick off is at 5.15pm at Takaro Park on Friday.
