And then there was one.
"Glamour girl" Ginger is the "lucky last" puppy waiting for adoption after being dumped at a local veterinary practice in a cardboard box on December 5, 2011.
Debra Westmoreland and her daughter Ellen-Margaret gave up their time to wean and care for the nine dumped puppies for the North Otago SPCA.
The response to the story about the pups' plight had been huge as eight of the nine had been adopted to new homes.
Gee Gee, the eighth, was spoken for on Sunday by a "lovely young local woman" living by herself who said the puppy would be cheaper than a man to live with, Mrs Westmorland said.
Ginger, a slight dog with a long snout and a ginger tint, now awaited her fate.
"She's lovely, a little darling with greeny-blue eyes. She would suit a retired couple who are still active," Mrs Westmoreland said.
Her family would continue to care for Ginger, but hopefully it would not be long before she finds a new home.
"We can't do it for much longer, it's hard," she said.
"We don't want it to happen, but she might have to be put down ... It's so sad."
