A mural which will be a centrepiece of the Scott 100 celebrations in 2013, is taking shape on the northern wall of the Oamaru Rowing Club.

Designed by Jill Bayley, the mural, which is about 9.2m long and 3.65m high, will feature Robert Falcon Scott's ship, Terra Nova, which carried the news of the death of the polar party to Oamaru.

Although the design was done by Ms Bayley and Ryan Moore, of Oamaru, the painting is being completed by young adults from Employment Plus, along with students from Waitaki Girls' High School and members of the Oamaru Rowing Club.

"The idea has been driven by Bronwyn Judge, and thanks to some generous sponsorships from Resene Paints, Youthtown and Creative Communities, a lot of the materials have been donated," she said.

"Local mural artist Col Ferguson will be there to pull all the final elements together and hopefully, someone or a company will come along and secure the naming rights for the mural. The funds will go towards funding the cost of repairing the roof at the rowing club."

The mural is expected to be completed by the end of January.
