The Oamaru Squash and Badminton Club unveiled its new glass walls at a Christmas party over the weekend.

The pervious walls only offered a limited view of matches with two small windows but the new installations enables spectators to get a closer look.

Club president Peter Mountain said he had combined the opening of the refurbishment with the club's Christmas party to make the day even more special and he wanted to maintain the family feel at the club.

"I wanted to combine the opening and the Christmas party, it's a family-oriented club and it's been a fantastic day for the kids to come and enjoy the barbecue."

The day was celebrated with a match between former Australian doubles champion and New South Wales over 40s No1 Jason McLauchlan and New Zealand under-19 No3 Chris van der Salm.

It was a blast from the past for McLauchlan who played his first squash tournament on one of the newly renovated courts in 1982.

He narrowly lost to Van der Salm who said he enjoyed the day.
