Pembroke beat Totara in school battle
Pembroke School clinched victory over Totara School in the final of the Cricket Festival Day in Oamaru yesterday.
Pembroke School accounted for Totara by just nine runs to win $100 of vouchers for Oamaru Sports and Outdoors.
North Otago Cricket Association coach Tim McCormick said for such a small school, Totara punched above its weight.
As the winner of the country pool, and runners-up at the festival, Totara received two Kookaburra cricket sets.
St Joseph's School, Ardgowan School, Weston School, Fenwick School and Papakaio School also entered teams, made up of eight year 5 and 6 boys and girls each, into the competition.
Games were eight overs per side, with each player bowling an over and each game took about 45 minutes.
McCormick said he noticed some very talented young cricketers at Centennial Park.
"There were a few kids who even surprised themselves."
He said the event was also designed to introduce the sport to non-cricketers to get them excited about cricket, improve their team work and build up their confidence and skills.
"It's all about them giving it a go, and we're trying to keep them playing."
He said it was a great day and North Otago Cricket hoped to run the same event again in Term 1 of 2013.
