The first of four races in this year's Ultimate Triathlon Series took place at Lake Hood in Ashburton last week.

Five Oamaruvians took part. Four St Kevin's students and their PE teacher Andy Collins competed in near perfect conditions.

The locals decided to choose the Sprint distance triathalon, which consisted of a 700m swim, a 30km bike ride and a 6km run.

Collins finished first in the 40-49 age group and 15-year-old Josh Macaulay came in seventh in the under-20 age group.

The SKC students also did themselves proud in the team event taking 1st place, Hamish Nimmo swam for the team, Georgia Hansen biked with Benny Yanzic running.
