If it wasn't for the generosity of the community giving during the festive season some Oamaru families wouldn't experience the joy of opening presents at Christmas.

Waitaki Classic Hits is reaching out for assistance to make Christmas merry for families who need help as part of its annual Classic Hits Christmas appeal.

"We're trying to help out families at Christmas that are less fortunate," Waitaki Classic Hit's Danny Park said.

"The presents will be delivered at Christmas and we want to try to get as many presents for the kids as possible."

Last year, Classic Hits helped 75 families going through difficult financial and social situations.

"It looks like we'll be delivering to the same amount of families this year, but we want as many presents as possible," Mr Park said.

Any gifts can be handed in to the Classic Hit's Thames St office before December 19.

If the gifts are wrapped when they are handed into the station, Classic Hits requests a note indicating whether the present is gender or age specific.
