Team up for relay to save lives

A 24-hour Relay for Life will be held at Centennial Park on March 12 and 13 next year to raise money for the cancer research and prevention effort.

Oamaru Relay for Life event manager Janie Peck said although registrations for teams of 10 don't open until September 22, expressions of interest are welcome.

"The event will run from midday on the Saturday to midday on the Sunday - there is no limit to the amount of teams we can take," she said yesterday.

Newly-appointed team captain co-ordinator Matt Haywood said he would be helping to support teams over the coming months and is hoping anyone and everyone will get involved.

"We are hoping families and workmates, or anyone really who wants to help raise funds for the cause, will form a team."

Mr Haywood can be found on the second floor of Community House from 11am to 2pm every Wednesday.

There will be a special launch for the relay at the Oamaru Opera House on September 22 and at the Kurow Memorial Hall on September 23.

Mrs Peck said money raised by the various teams would go to the Cancer Society Otago/Southland Division. This will help it provide support services, additional resources, and health promotion and would also help fund research at the University of Otago.

The cost to register is $10 per person and this includes breakfast on the Sunday and a T-shirt.

There is a website on the relay at www.relayforlife.org.nz or, for more details, phone 434 1000.
