Waihemo board needs by election

The Waihemo Community Board will have a by-election early next year as there are only four nominations for its five seats.

Waitaki electoral officer Debbi Miall said a by-election was needed after the last elections for a similar reason.

Alex Familton was elected Mayor when had also put his name in for the Waihemo Community Board, but could not do both, leaving just four nominations, she said.

The Waitaki Electoral Office will set a by-election date after the main election results have been confirmed.

Mrs Miall could not speculate about what factors may have contributed to the lack of candidate interest.

"The Ahuriri ward is just as rural and they [the Ahuriri Community Board] have no problem," Mrs Miall said.
