Woman on assault charges

Martin Sykes

A 19-year-old Oamaru woman will appear in the Oamaru District Court this week, facing charges of assaulting police after allegedly repeatedly punching a female constable in the head on Saturday.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson said police received a complaint that a 17-year-old Oamaru man had stolen alcohol from Liquorland while breaching his home detention at 4.40pm on Saturday.

When police arrived at an Arundel St address, the 17-year-old "violently resisted" police.

The 19-year-old woman came to his assistance, to help him "escape" from police.

In her attempts to free her associate, she allegedly punched a female constable "numerous times" in the head, resulting in minor bruising.

They were both arrested.

The 19-year-old woman will appear in the Oamaru District Court on Wednesday, charged with assaulting police.

On charges of escaping police and theft, the 17-year-old man will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
