Gliding takes off in Omarama

Glide Omarama has been busy with both domestic and international clients over the holiday period, general manager Guy Sanders says.

Based at the Omarama Airfield, Glide Omarama offers courses and scenic flights around the Southern Alps.

Mr Sanders said they had been very busy with people from all over New Zealand as well as international visitors.

It’s always busy around this time of year but they’ve had more people this season than the last two years, he said.

“I just think there’s a lot more people travelling both domestically and internationally.”

The numbers for their international course have been up and they are booked solidly until February.

The spring weather caused a slow start but it has been picking up since the middle of December with summer coming into full force, the manager said.

Glide Omarama has also been busy with the Ostler Wines National Multi-Class Gliding Championships which are being held at the moment.

The event, which is held every two years alternating between Omarama and Matamata in the North Island, has 27 competitors taking part over 10 days.

They’d been getting a small crowd of spectators, mainly to watch take-offs at about 1pm each, since the event’s commencement on Monday.
