“Alarming” reports of poaching in the Hakataramea Valley have lead police to patrol the area and farmers to create their own neighbourhood watch groups.
Constable Nayland Smith, of Omarama, said police were called out on Saturday at 11pm after a woman reported being woken by a spotlight reflecting through her bedroom window and the sound of several high-powered shots.
The shots were so close to her house she dived out of bed on to the floor and called the police, he said.
