Man’s death believed to be accidental

A 60-year-old Waimate man was found dead in an effluent pond on Friday afternoon on a Waitaki Bridge property.

Sergeant Craig Sew Hoy said police were informed of a sudden death on McPherson’s Road at 2.55pm.

Sgt Sew Hoy said the death is being treated as an accident and is being investigated by WorksafeNZ.

The death is being referred to the coroner.

A 17 year old Christchurch girl was airlifted from an area near Ohau Ski Field, Omarama, with leg injuries after a skiing accident on Saturday afternoon.

The girl, who is an experienced skier and was part of a well organised party, injured her lower leg while skiing an area known as Dunbell Lake, Mount Sutton.

The ski party notified emergency services and she was airlifted to hospital at about 6pm on Saturday night.

The Weston Fire Brigade were called to a vehicle crash on the Weston-Ngapara Road, near Kanes Road, at 7am on Sunday morning.

Sgt Sew Hoy said a car crashed off the road and was found on fire. No occupants were seen in or with the vehicle.

Police enquiries showed the vehicle was taken from a Thames Highway, Oamaru, address and later yesterday police noted that a break-in had occurred at the same address.

Police are asking for information on any sightings of a late model, red/burgandy Holden Commodore in the Weston-Ngapara or Oamaru area, or if anyone picked up a person or people walking on the Weston Road early Sunday morning. Please contact Oamaru police or 0800 Crimestoppers.
