Most of Holmes St was closed for about 30 minutes on Friday after a man allegedly hit a power pole with his vehicle.
Oamaru Police Constable Ash Pickworth said the man suffered a bleeding nose after allegedly becoming distracted while reaching for something in his car, and then hit the power pole.
The car sustained moderate damage to the left front wheel arch and the power pole snapped off at the base, he said.
Two patrol cars, an ambulance and two fire trucks attended the scene and the east portion of Holmes St was closed for about 30 minutes, Constable Pickworth said.
Drivers were easily distracted and needed to be aware that noticing what was going on outside the car was much more important than what was happening inside the car, he said.
The man has not been charged at this stage.
