“Vote in the asset sale referendum,” was the message Green Party MP Eugenie Sage was conveying in Oamaru yesterday.

Ms Sage and Oamaru Green Party member Karen Swaine were handing out leaflets in Thames St encouraging people to vote in the referendum which started on November 22 and ends on December 13.

The citizens-initiated referendum, asks: ”Do you support the Government selling up to 49 per cent of Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power, Genesis Power, Solid Energy and Air New Zealand?”

Ms Sage said the idea that New Zealand mum and dad investors were buying shares in state assets was “a myth”.

“The referendum is a chance to send Government a strong message to keep assets Kiwi and to tell Government that they want the dividend flow to go to the Crown, rather than offshore to corporate interests.”

Voting papers for the referendum have been mailed out. Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden said all papers should be delivered by today.

The vote is being conducted by post, so papers should be returned using the envelope provided.

While voting closes on December 13, returns should be posted by December 12 to ensure they arrive on time.
