People wanting confirmation of who will be standing in the Waitaki electorate for the General Election will have to wait until Wednesday, August 27.
A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission said while the major political parties had already confirmed candidates, nominations did not officially open until Thursday, August 21.
Other important dates include the deadline for registered political parties to bulk nominate their electorate candidates (noon, Monday, August 25); the deadline for political parties to nominate List candidates; and deadline for individual nominations to be received (Tuesday, August 26).
All candidates will be confirmed on Wednesday, August 27, following the issuing of the writ, which is a legal document formalising the upcoming General Election on September 20.
The spokesperson said candidates could announce their intention to stand and start advertising at any stage.
She said we were now in the regulated period (June 20-September 19) and candidates had a budget of $25,700 to spend on their campaign. They are required to file returns outlining expenditure during this period. She said any costs incurred outside of the regulated period were not officially recorded.
The three Waitaki candidates who have already announced they will be standing are current MP Jacqui Dean (National), Glenda Alexander (Labour) and Hessel van Wieren (Democratic).
