Foveran Deer Park, Kurow, held its annual hind and weaner sale on Monday.
Deer stud manager, Barry Gard, said there was a pleasing gallery with average prices being similar to last year.
“While we didn’t sell everything, what we did sell sold well,” Mr Gard said.
Many buyers at deer sales bid by telephone, he said, so there were more buyers behind the scenes.
PGG Wrightson agent, Glen Hopkinson, said it was a very sound sale and deer were sold to as far north as Taupo and south to Invercargill.
He said the Foveran sale is probably the biggest offering in New Zealand.
The top price of $4,800 was paid for a weaner stag by the sire McCaw, closely followed by the second top price of $4,500 for a son of Lord Haka.
Twelve of the fourteen weaner stags on offer were sold for an average price of $2,550.
Weaner hinds averaged $1,977 with the highest bid at $3,400.
Embryos (which are purchased implanted in ordinary hinds) averaged $2,240 with the top price being $3,800. The embryos are sired by the deer park’s top performing stags and all hinds are vetted in-calf.
In-calf mixed-age hinds averaged $1,711 with the top bid at $2,600.
