Multiple lamb births amaze farmers

John and Aileen Macdonald may only have 60 ewes on their Weston property, but the sheep population has exploded this season.

Five ewes have produced sets of quad lambs and although most of the young lambs are healthy and thriving, Mr and Mrs Macdonald have helped balance the feeding responsibilities and have five lambs they are hand feeding.

Mr Macdonald said the latest addition to the multiple births was a four-tooth romney-corredale cross ewe, who safelty delivered four healthy lambs.

“She is doing very well and has plenty of milk,” Mr Macdonald said.

“My wife Aileen and I are also sharing the job of feeding five orphan lambs which came off the multi-birth ewes to help them feed their remaining offspring.”

The Macdonalds farm on 60 acres at Whiterocks Rd and both are amazed that so many multi-births have occurred amongst the small flock this season.
