Livestock Improvement Corporation has appointed a new farm solutions manager for the North Otago/Maniototo area who will be based in Oamaru.
Marinka Kingma from Balclutha has been in the role for about a month and says she is very excited to have taken up employment with LIC.
Miss Kingma comes from a dairy farming background and her family used to farm at Enfield on Elderslie Dairy Farm, a property which milked 2000 cows through two sheds. She attended St Kevin’s College from year 9-11 and left to move to Balclutha in 2008.
She is finishing off her Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree, majoring in agriculture, and has been shepherding at Omakau, Central Otago, for the last few months.
The amount of growth in the dairy industry in North Otago has been huge, she said.
“Ten years ago North Otago was nothing like this.
“Irrigation and technology have really changed dairying and it’s very exciting.”
Miss Kingma will attend two spearate training weeks in Hamilton in October and November and says her degree is helping a lot in the early stages of her job.
