Oamaru Lions Club 202J held a speech competition for people aged 16-21 at Fenwick School on Sunday.

The competition featured eight speakers from the 202J area, which stretches as far down as Milton and up to Ashburton.

The overall winner was Kaleisha Jones of St Kevin’s College, while second and third places went to Hannah Ballantyne of Waitaki Girls’ High and Sydney Telfer of St Kevin’s College.

Lions Club 202J district convenor Allan Prakash said he was delighted with the quality of speeches given.

“They all spoke really well and I was happy with the overall standard. It was tough to declare a winner, but Kaleisha did stand out more than the others.”

Mr Prakash said the winner should do really well at the national final in Tauranga.

“Kaleisha will go really well and I’m expecting she will win it because of how good her speech was.”

There were 10 contestants scheduled to take part, but only eight competed, with two pulling out due to illness.

The national final will be held in Tauranga on August 16, with the winner receiving an all-expenses-paid trip to Canada and the United States. There will be six others in the finals.
