The Awamoa Croquet Club’s 90th anniversary celebrations began yesterday with afternoon tea held at the Awamoa Bowling Club.
Celebrations will continue today with a fun day at the Awamoa Gardens Club on Awamoa Road from 10am to 3pm.
The decision to form the Awamoa Club was made on May 24, 1924, following a meeting held at the Junction Hotel.
Mayor Mr J. McDiarmid occupied the chair, with 25 ladies present, and after some discussion, it was decided that a club known as the Awamoa Croquet Club would be formed.
A temporary committee was elected and all ladies present at the meeting enrolled as members.
The subscription for the first year was fixed at one guinea. Membership was limited to 65, but only 20 to 30 were full playing members at any one time.
The remainder were enrolled as honorary members at 10 shillings and sixpence, with the right of becoming full members as vacancies occurred.
The Awamoa Club amalgamated with the Gardens Croquet Club in 2011 to form Awamoa Gardens Croquet Club and a new flag was raised yesterday to mark the occasion.
