The Waitaki Girls’ High School rugby side have made the Hanan Shield Secondary Schoolgirls competition for the first time.
Their 29-14 win against Timaru’s Craighead Diocesan School guaranteed them the final spot.
It was also the first time the side had made the top four in the competition.
Co-coach Graeme Blackler said the girl’s scored some excellent tries.
He said the side’s defence effort was huge.
“Craighead didn’t score in the second half at all,” he said.
“Their defence really won them the game.”
Blackler said backs Leah Slee and Lini Kaufana played an outstanding game and forwards Tacia Fifita and Jess Mason were also stand outs.
Waitaki will travel to Timaru next Wednesday for the final.
