Excelsior were crowned North Otago champs and the Taward St netball courts on Saturday following a thrilling 25-22 clash with Eastern.
It was a last outing for stalwarts Paula Symes of Blues and Eastern’s Carmen Brensell, and the action-packed encounter was one to be remembered.
Symes praised her team’s tireless work rate and the sharp shooting of Nga Karameana
“What a way to finish my netball playing days,” she said.
“The difference today (between the two teams) was some outstanding shooting by Nga Karameana (GA) and the huge amount of work our attacks Kathryn Kawau and Anika McLennan did.
“Our defence end certainly did our job too but it was our attacks that stood out today.
“As sponsors of the team for the last three years, Symes Building Ltd are so proud of the team too – awesome effort.”
Brenssell commended her players’ commitment to the cause.
“I was so proud of how the Eastern girls played on Saturday,” she said.
“Considering how our team is made up of players from Wakouaiti to Waimate, we have not had the luxury of coming together as a team during the week to build on our combinations.
“It was an awesome final and I wouldn’t have changed a thing, except for the result.”
