Bowlers head to national tournament

Three Oamaru men are winging their way to Auckland for a national bowls tournament with a twist.
Awamoa club members Bill Kingan, Bob Wilson and Peter Bell will be the Otago-Southland representatives at the Tiger Turf Winter League event at the Epsom club on August 27.
They will join seven other teams at the $15,000 tournament.
It is pairs bowls, but with a difference. There are actually teams of three _ just two play at one time _ and innovations like a shot clock and power play are designed to boost the speed of the game.
Games also frequently come down to a one-end shootout after two sets of five ends.
“It’s a bit of a novelty, and it’s a lot quicker,” Kingan said.
“We played three qualifiers and the final at the weekend, and we started at 10am and it was all over by 3.15pm.”
The Awamoa bowlers won the Otago-Southland title in Invercargill, beating a Waverley (Southland) team in the last end in the final.
They now get a fully funded trip to Auckland for the New Zealand finals.Sneakers StorebalerĂnky
