Bowls gets good start

The Clubs New Zealand 2015 National Men’s Outdoor Bowls tournament began in fine conditions yesterday, following team registrations at the Oamaru Club on Sunday.

More than 100 teams, coming from Auckland to Wanaka, will be competing for the Moase Cup, Jack Travis Cup, Jim Dempsey trophy and Kelly Plate at Otematata, Meadowbank, Phoenix, Awamoa, Maheno and Hampden bowling clubs.

Local umpire Graham Thorn said the opening day had been a resounding success at the Phoenix Club, with Oamaruvians and tourists alike enjoying the warm weather and top-notch greens.

“It’s been good. There’s been no wind.

“It’s been nice and warm and everybody has enjoyed a lovely green that has been prepared very well by the Phoenix Club,” he said.

“No-one has complained, other than at their own skill. It’s been a very good day. Hopefully it doesn’t rain.”

Tournament secretary Murray Lamb told the Oamaru Mail on Sunday that he expected the event to provide a boost to the local economy, with 102 teams of four staying in North Otago.

The competition will continue until Friday.
