Bowls tournament a ‘laid back’ event

Bowlers from North Otago, Timaru and Waimate converged on the Phoenix Bowling Club yesterday.

The Licensed Victuallers Association Bowls Tournament run by the Maheno Tavern was being held by the Maheno Bowling Club at the Phoenix Bowling Club.

Although it was being run by Maheno, with 20 teams involved they were unable to host it at their own club since only eight greens were available there.

Maheno Bowling Club president Bob Winter said it was a great day out for the bowlers.

“It’s often a lot of fun and they enjoy it because it’s a bit more laid back than other bowls tournaments.”

The numbers were down on last year, with 20 teams competing.

“There are two less teams than last year, just because the scheduling of this tournament has clashed with other tournaments so a couple of other clubs were unable to make it.”

Mr Wilson heaped praise on Waimate.

“They’re fantastic. They’ve brought down five teams so it’s great to see that.”

All of the clubs from Oamaru were represented at the tournament which has been going for about 20 years.

Many of the bowlers were honing their skills ahead of next week’s National Chartered Bowls Tournament also being played at the Phoenix Bowling Club.
