Covid-19 has hit the sporting world hard this year, but there are still achievements that need to be celebrated in the Waitaki district, Diane Talanoa says.
The Waitaki Sports Awards organiser is calling for more nominations for the 2020 edition of the event, which will be held early next year.
Waitaki residents were notoriously slow at nominating people for the event and this year was no different, Talanoa said.
“We know there were a lot of sports that didn’t occur; obviously Covid had a big impact,” she said.
“But we do believe there are still people out there who have achieved and done same amazing things.”
The awards ceremony was a “great evening’s entertainment” and a way of raising the profile of sports in the district, she said.
In the past, there had been instances where winning an award had resulted in more funding, especially for lesser-known sports.
Nominations close at the end of November, but late nominations for achievements in summer sports until December 31 would be accepted, Talanoa said.
