Ranfurly Shield fever hit Palmerston yesterday, when the Log o’ Wood visited the town ahead of this weekend’s shield match in Dunedin.
Palmerston’s Charles Engelbrecht, 9, was confident the side would retain the shield.
“They tackle hard and they run fast,” he said.
And Charles knows his rugby.
The Eastern under-9 player scored 35 tries this season.
Otago rugby players Hugh Blake, Tony Ensor and Jackson Hemopo signed rugby balls, posters and whatever the students had handy while others had their photo taken with the prized shield.
“Our team’s quite young, and to do it for all the past Otago players who had missed out on the shield was pretty cool to do,” said Ensor.
