The Oamaru Albion Cricket Club’s investment in its development programme has paid off with three members selected to represent Otago at national tournaments in January.
Club Captain Ricky Whyte praised the players’ attitude.
“Amber (Cunningham), Nathan (Smith) and Jeremy (Smith) have turned up every week showing the dedication and commitment to become better and better cricketers,” he said.
Cunningham will head to Wanganui as part of the Otago Under-15 girls team. The 13-year-old plays for Albion’s intermediate mixed outfit and displayed natural talent, scoring close to 500 runs without giving up her wicket.
Brothers Nathan and Jeremy Smith have produced impressive displays recently in the North Otago Hawke Cup side. Nathan will be Wellington-bound in mid-January with the Otago Under-17 side while Jeremy will travel to Lincoln with the Otago Under-19 team for their national tournament.
Veteran club member Steve Halliwell insisted with the kind sponsorship received Albion can continue to produce promising young cricketers.
“With the generous $750 contribution towards their travel costs from sponsor P&W Painters Ltd, Albion Cricket is ensuring these future stars can focus on their cricket at this high level,” he said.
