The FIFA Under 20 World Cup trophy is touring the country and will arrive in Oamaru for local football fanatics to enjoy next Tuesday at the Oamaru Showgrounds.
Football fans and all other members of the community are encouraged to attend a range of fun events as the southern region prepares for next year’s tournament.
Football Waitaki chairman Phil Collings said the day would offer locals a great opportunity to get a feel for one of the biggest tournaments in world sport.
“It’s one for the biggest tournaments in the world in terms of spectators and exposure,” he said.
“From a local point of view, I think it enables people to get amongst it, to see the trophy and understand how big an organisation FIFA is and have opportunities to go to games.
“I think it’s great they’re bringing it around the country. It’s fantastic.
“What better way is there to bring the game to the forefront?”
FIFA Under 20 World Cup 2015 Local Organising Committee CEO Dave Beeche said the aim of the tour was to give football fans across the country a taste of the upcoming spectacle, with the trophy that had been lifted by some of the world’s greatest players.
“With our tournament little more than a year away, we wanted to give football fans across the country a chance to get a taste of what is coming and to feel part of the excitement.
“Kiwis get to see the trophy before the players vying for it do and we think that’s pretty special.
“This trophy has been held aloft by some of the greatest footballers in the world – players such as Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona who first found fame at this event.”
The trophy will have a full road show accompanying it with a 16m x 8m inflatable football pitch, inflatable goal, a kicking wall and photos boards.
The activities will be suitable for all ages and the event is free to attend.
