Oamaru rowers made a cracking start to the first regatta of the summer last weekend.
James Scott and Logan Docherty each claimed opening-day gold medals in the R2K single sculls regatta on Lake Ruataniwha.
Scott powered home to win the under-19 men’s final, topping the field by 4.5sec, while Docherty matched that effort in the under-17 boys race with a 7sec advantage.
Christchurch-based Oamaru rower Mark Taylor was second in the open final, two spots ahead of Dunedin-based Oamaru rower Jared Brenssell.
Hannah Cunningham was third in the under-16 girls final.
Later on Saturday, there was a strong Oamaru influence in the Otago team that claimed a third straight South Island title.
Taylor, the New Zealand junior representative and former Maadi Cup champion, won the men’s open double sculls (with Corey Lewis), was part of the champion men’s eight crew, and was second in the open four and coxless pair.
Scott continued his excellent form with victory in the under-20 single sculls and coxless squad, and was third in the under-20 double sculls.
Brenssell was part of the winning eight and under-20 four crews, and former Oamaru rower Sydney Telfer was second in the eight and open double sculls.
