Former champion cyclist turns 80

Former champion cyclist John Peoples celebrated his 80th birthday with family and friends over the weekend in Oamaru.

The gathering was attended by family members from far and wide – Peoples’ son flew in from Austin, Texas, while his daughters travelled across the Tasman from Byron Bay to attend the birthday bash.

The former cyclist’s career saw him compete in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Wales, cycle across Europe during an OE, win a national title and coach at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.
