Girls on target at shooting nationals

Students from Waitaki Boys’ High School and St Kevin’s College performed well at the South Island Secondary Schools Clay Target DTL (down-the-line) Championships last Saturday, followed by the National Secondary Schools competition on Sunday and the National Secondary Schools skeet event on Monday.

The standout shooters of the weekend were the St Kevin’s pairing of Georgia Blair and Jessica Fraser.

Fraser won the South Island Secondary Schools high overall of the girls’ section, placed first in single rise and third in the points score, while Waitaki Boys’ High students Angus Trimble and Lewis Mulligan finished first and second respectively in the boys’ single barrel.

Coach James Robertson said Mulligan performed exceptionally well for a first year shooter, and has plenty of potential.

In the national competition on Sunday, Georgia Blair notched a second place finish in the single rise competition.

Following their impressive displays, Blair and Fraser were selected to the South Island DTL girls’ team, which downed the North Island. Fraser was also selected to the successful regional Fish & Game team.

The medal haul continued to grow on Monday as Fraser took out first place in the girls’ secondary schools national skeet shooting competition, while Blair finished with a bronze medal in the same event.

To round the three-day competition off in style, the dynamic duo went on to place second in the open event, with only one boys’ team bettering their efforts in blustery conditions.
